Urbana landmark Embassy Tavern closing at end of month

URBANA ? The Embassy Tavern, a fixture in downtown Urbana for live music 
and hamburgers, will close at the end of the month.

Operator Ross Veach said the business was not making money, and he has 
notified his employees of the pending closure. Veach has been operating 
the bar since May 2007. The space at 114 S. Race St., however, has long 
been home to a tavern.

Building owner David Kraft of Urbana confirmed he received notice about 
the closure, and as someone who lives near the tavern, "I am sad it's 
closing," Kraft said.

"Obviously I don't want it to be vacant for an extended period of time. 
I will work to prevent that from happening," he said, adding that Veach 
has several years left on the lease. Kraft declined to comment any further.

"It was wonderful to play there. The crowd is great; the people are very 
responsive," said trombonist Morgan Powell, whose band, the Boneyard 
Jazz Quintet, has played there regularly on Friday nights.

Powell has frequented the bar for its live music and hamburgers since 
the mid-1960s, when he moved to the Champaign-Urbana area.

"I like playing there primarily because of the tradition of the Embassy. 
It's been around since the 1930s, and it's a landmark," Powell said.

Because of the long, narrow space of the bar, it can be a little awkward 
for musicians to play there, but "the place is a lot of fun. There are 
times when the Embassy has just been magical," said Tom Duncanson, the 
agent for Kilborn Alley, a blues band that has played there regularly 
for about a year.

Duncanson described the Embassy as an "unpretentious place" where people 
feel safe and can let their hair down.

Small music venues like the Embassy "are absolutely essential" to new 
bands, Duncanson said. "They take chances on new acts."

"If you close the Embassy, that's 104 nights of live music lost, and 
that is a huge loss for live music," Duncanson added.

With the upcoming closure, the city is also losing a regular lunch and 
dinner spot for people who work downtown.

"We are saddened to hear about the closure," said Kathy Saad, who works 
at the insurance firm Brown, Hobbs & McMurray, located right next door 
to the tavern. "They had good cheeseburgers, and the people who worked 
there were nice."
