Group * Title: New piano fundraiser Date: Tuesday August 18, 2009 Time: 7:00 am - 8:00 am Location: The Iron Post Notes: As the ninth anniversary of the opening of the Iron Post nears (Sept. 19), we might reflect on the memorable shows that have happen at ?The Post?- biannual visits by Astral Project, faculty shows by Chip McNeill, Chip Stephens, Jim Pugh, Glenn Wilson, Jeff Grubbs, Larry Gray and Dana Hall, The Bobby Broom Quintet, Thollem McDonnas, and a guest appearance by John Faddis. The Post having a piano made many of these shows possible. Many times over the course of the years, particularly in the jazz community, there have been discussions that The Post needed a piano of better quality that the one John ?Doc? Scott donated some five years ago. Though this piano has been dependable, it has seen better days and the cost of bring it back to ?artist? quality would be huge, and even then that may not be enough. So the possibility of acquiring a new piano of the standards and quality of the shows past and possible shows future has presented itself. Through the guidance of Director of Jazz Studies Chip McNeill, Jazz Professor Chip Stephens and others a possible replacement for our bar piano has been found. Former Urbana resident Tom Becker has a 7 foot Baldwin model F grand piano circa 1957, that he has offered for sale. This is the same piano that was the stalwart of Smith Hall room 25 for almost forty years, that was played by then student Donny Heitler, Laurence Hobgood, and Jim McNeeley among many others. It was purchased by Tom Becker in 1997 as Smith Hall was upgraded, rebuilt by Tom and has been kept it near perfect condition at his home in Chestnut. Illinois. Due to the current business climate, the City of Urbana?s unreasonable licensing and fee system, and a multitude of operating expenses The Iron Post would never be able to purchase this piano. In cooperation with The Jazz Studies Department and Chip McNeill, a portion of the moneys have been made available. The remainder is up to the supporters of live shows at The Post.
