November schedule for the Buick All-Stars follows:

Friday, 9 November, 8-11 pm at Hubers.
Hubers is located at 1312 W. Church St. Champaign.
As always, expect cold beer and hot music.

Sunday, 11 November, 7:30 pm at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
Studio Theater - $10 Adult / $7 Senior Citizen / $4 Student

At the Krannert engagement, the two Marks (Smart and Ginsberg) will be
playing with the University of Illinois Jazz Guitar Ensemble.

This is a big change of pace from our bar appearances.

We will be playing a piece written for Pat Metheny by Steve Reich called
"Electric Counterpoint."  This is strictly concert music with no
improvisation.  The piece is modern and minimalist, relying on repeating
patterns to set up interesting musical textures (i.e. similar to stuff
you may have heard by Phillip Glass, Terry Riley, etc.)  There is no
overarching melody line.

The unusual aspect of this performance is that the piece was written for
a single guitarist playing in front of a dense track-on-track
recording.  The guitar ensemble will attempt to play the entire thing
live with 10 guitars, 2 basses, and 2 vibraphones.  No tape! Live
without a net!  The piece is intense to play, but is quite meditative to
listen to.

The other pieces played will be more standard jazz and fusion fare.  The
Jazz Trombone and Jazz Saxophone Ensembles are also on the bill.
